Marching Orders

Here's a beautiful post from Michelle of Jimmy Akin's blog comparing Pope John Paul the Great and Pope Benedict XVI with St. Francis of Assisi and St. Dominic.

Also on my mind in the last few weeks has been the Carmelites, who had a very special place in our late pontiff's heart. Pope John Paul, as you may know, was a third order Carmelite and had actually been turned away from a Carmelite monastery as a young man when he tried to enter (good thing, too, or he probably never would have become pope). Additionally, his doctoral dissertation was on the great Carmelite mystic and Doctor of the Church, St. John of the Cross.

A Catholic Terp alum, Elizabeth Hartley, entered the Carmel of Mary in North Dakota last Nov. 1 and on Friday she entered the novitiate, taking the religious name Sister Veronica of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Please keep Sr. Veronica in your prayers. Also, she asked her mother (who passed the word on to us) a few weeks ago to pray that the Carmel of Mary be blessed with vocations, as she is now the only woman in the novitiate. I think we should all ask Pope John Paul's intercession on this, as he understood well the gift to the Church that is found in the Carmelite order and also the importance of cloistered communities to the life of the Church.
